80% of School Drop-outs from Roma Families

The main reasons for Bulgarian students dropping out of school are poor environment and conflicts with teachers and schoolmates, a survey of Vitosha research agency shows.
The survey is part of a project of the Education Ministry and Unicef foundation that seeks to find out the main driver behind school dropouts.
Almost all of the children in Bulgaria who don't graduate from high school quit their education in the 5th - 8th grade.
A total of 80% of all drop-outs are of Roma origin and they often leave school for financial reeasons.
The project as well as possible measures to be taken for decreasing the dropout numbers were discussed in the Education Ministry on Monday.
The discussion was joined by the Education Minister Daniel Valchev, Oktavian Bivol, a representative of Unicef for Bulgaria, Christina Popivanova, the project manager of Unicef - Bulgaria, parent associations and non-profit organizations
